Blacktown is one of Sydney’s largest and fastest-growing centres, with more than 50,000 residents in the suburb itself. Most of it was built during the big suburban expansion of the 1950s and 1960s, and much of that original housing is now being renovated, replaced or subdivided. Add Western Sydney’s hotter summers and the suburb’s creeks and parklands, and you have ideal conditions for several of Sydney’s most damaging pests.

Post-war homes on timber floors

Many Blacktown homes are 1950s to 1970s fibro, weatherboard and brick-veneer houses on raised timber floors. Over decades, garden beds get built up against walls, paths and patios are added over the original termite shields, and timber pergolas, decks and sheds are fixed to the house. Each change can create a hidden bridge for subterranean termites from the soil into the frame – and termites can do serious damage before anyone notices.

Knockdown-rebuilds, duplexes and renovations

Blacktown’s ongoing renewal means many blocks have been disturbed: old houses demolished, tree roots and stumps left in the ground, new slabs poured and duplexes built. Disturbed termite colonies go looking for new food, and a new home is only protected if its termite management system is correctly installed, documented and maintained. We regularly find new builds where the barrier has been breached by later landscaping.

Hotter Western Sydney summers

Blacktown typically records around a month of days above 30°C each summer, noticeably hotter than coastal suburbs. Heat speeds up cockroach breeding, drives ants indoors looking for water, brings European and paper wasps into eaves and wall cavities, and increases spider activity around homes, sheds and pool fences.

Creeks, reserves and parklands

Bungarribee Park, Blacktown Showground, Grantham Reserve and the creek corridors and reserves that thread through the suburb provide shelter for rats, mosquitoes after rain, and ground-dwelling spiders including funnel-webs. Homes backing onto reserves or drainage easements usually need perimeter protection rather than an indoor-only treatment.

Units around the station and Westpoint

Apartment living has grown quickly around Blacktown station, Westpoint and the town centre. Shared walls, bin rooms and high tenant turnover make German cockroaches and bed bugs the most common problems in these buildings.
