Sydney's Most Effective German Cockroach Treatment
German cockroaches (Blattella germanica) are the most common – and the most difficult – cockroach species in Sydney homes and businesses. They breed faster than any other Australian cockroach, hide deep inside appliances and wall cavities, and have developed strong resistance to over-the-counter sprays and supermarket bombs. By the time most people see one in daylight, the infestation is already well established.
On Call Pest Control specialises in eliminating German cockroach infestations across Sydney Metro. We service apartments, terraces, family homes, restaurants, cafés, food courts, commercial kitchens, hotels and rental properties – from the Inner West and Eastern Suburbs through to Western Sydney, the Northern Beaches, North Shore, Sutherland Shire and the Hills District. Treatments start from $89, and we offer same-day callouts for urgent infestations.

Why German Cockroaches Are Harder to Get Rid Of
German cockroaches behave differently to the larger American, Australian, and Oriental cockroaches Sydney residents are more familiar with – and that difference is exactly why DIY treatments almost always fail.
- They breed extraordinarily fast. A single female carries an egg case (ootheca) containing up to 40 eggs, and she can produce a new case every few weeks. One pregnant female brought into a Sydney apartment can produce a full infestation in under six months.
- They live indoors permanently. Unlike outdoor cockroach species, German cockroaches do not survive well outside. They live their entire life cycle inside buildings – behind dishwashers, inside fridge motors, in kettle bases, under sinks, in cracks behind tiles.
- They are resistant to common sprays. Decades of overuse of supermarket insecticides have produced widespread chemical resistance in German cockroach populations. Pyrethroid sprays and bug bombs typically kill the visible insects but leave egg cases and hidden adults completely untouched.
- They spread between units. In Sydney’s apartment buildings, German cockroaches travel between units through wall cavities, plumbing risers, electrical conduits and shared rubbish chutes. Treating one unit in isolation rarely solves the problem in a high-density block.
- They trigger asthma and allergies. German cockroach droppings, shed skins and saliva are recognised asthma triggers, particularly in children. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare lists cockroach allergens among the most common indoor asthma triggers in NSW homes.
How to Identify a German Cockroach
Correctly identifying the species matters because German cockroaches require a completely different treatment approach to American or Australian cockroaches. Here’s what to look for:
- Size: 10–15 mm long as adults – much smaller than American or Australian cockroaches, which can reach 35–40 mm.
- Colour: light brown to tan, with two distinctive dark parallel stripes running lengthways down the pronotum (the shield-like area behind the head). These stripes are the easiest identification marker.
- Wings: adults have wings that extend the length of the body, but they almost never fly. They run extremely fast instead.
- Where you see them: almost always indoors, almost always in kitchens or bathrooms, almost always near food, water or warmth. If you are seeing small light-brown cockroaches under your dishwasher, behind your fridge, or in your bathroom cabinet, they are almost certainly German cockroaches.
- When you see them: primarily at night. Daytime sightings indicate an established infestation – the population has outgrown the available hiding spaces and individuals are being forced out into the open.
Signs of a German Cockroach Infestation
Even if you have not actually seen a live cockroach, the following are reliable indicators that you have a problem:
- Droppings that look like ground black pepper or coffee grounds. Found in cupboards, drawers, behind appliances, and along skirting boards. Larger infestations leave noticeable deposits.
- Egg capsules (oothecae). Light brown, oval-shaped, around 6–9 mm long. Often stuck in cracks behind or under appliances, in cupboard corners, or behind kettle and toaster bases.
- A musty, oily smell. Established colonies produce a distinctive musty odour from aggregation pheromones. If your kitchen has an unfamiliar smell that returns after cleaning, it may not be the bin.
- Shed skins and dead bodies. Cockroaches moult several times. You may find translucent shed exoskeletons in cupboards, behind appliances, or in drawer corners.
- Smear marks on walls and surfaces. Greasy brown smears along skirting boards, behind sinks, or near plumbing entries indicate heavy traffic routes.
- Live cockroaches during the day. The single clearest sign of a serious infestation. By the time you see one in daylight, you almost certainly have hundreds you can’t see.
Our German Cockroach Treatment Process
German cockroach treatment is not a one-spray-and-done job. Effective elimination requires breaking the breeding cycle, which means treating adults, nymphs and egg cases over a defined period using the right combination of products. Our process is designed to do exactly that.
Step 1 – Inspection and species confirmation
On arrival we inspect the affected areas (almost always kitchen and bathroom), confirm the species, identify harbourage points, and assess the severity of the infestation. This determines the treatment plan and the products we’ll use.
Step 2 – Targeted gel baiting
German cockroaches respond extremely well to professional-grade gel baits, which are far more effective than sprays. We apply small dots of gel directly into harbourage points — inside cupboard hinges, behind appliances, around plumbing entries, and along travel routes. Cockroaches feed on the bait and return to the harbourage, where the active ingredient is transferred to other roaches and into the egg cases through secondary kill.
Step 3 – Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) application
IGRs prevent juvenile cockroaches from reaching reproductive maturity. This is the critical step that breaks the breeding cycle – even if some adults survive the initial treatment, IGRs ensure their offspring never become breeding adults. We apply IGRs into wall cavities, behind appliances and into cracks where eggs are laid.
Step 4 – Residual treatment of harbourage zones
Where appropriate, we apply low-toxicity residual products to non-food-contact surfaces in identified harbourage zones. This adds a long-lasting barrier without compromising kitchen hygiene.
Step 5 – Follow-up and monitoring
For moderate to severe infestations, we recommend a follow-up treatment 2–3 weeks after the initial visit. This catches any nymphs that have hatched from egg cases laid before the first treatment, and confirms the colony is fully eliminated.
For typical residential infestations, customers see a 70–80% reduction in cockroach activity within the first week, and complete elimination within 4–6 weeks. We back our work with a service warranty – if cockroaches return within the warranty period, we come back at no cost.
Specialist German Cockroach Services Across Sydney
Apartment & Strata Treatments
Sydney’s high-density apartment buildings — particularly older walk-ups in the Inner West, Eastern Suburbs and along the rail corridors — are notorious German cockroach hotspots. Treating one unit in isolation rarely works, because the colony is moving through wall cavities and shared services. We work directly with strata managers and body corporates on building-wide treatment programs that address the source, not just the symptoms. Individual unit treatments are also available where strata won’t act.
Restaurant & Commercial Kitchen Treatments
German cockroaches are a serious risk for any food business. A single sighting by a council inspector or a customer can cost a restaurant its reputation and its food safety compliance. We provide discreet, after-hours treatments for restaurants, cafés, food courts, takeaways, hotels, aged care facilities and commercial kitchens across Sydney. Every commercial treatment includes a written service report suitable for council food safety inspections and HACCP audits.
End-of-Lease Cockroach Treatments
Many Sydney rental contracts require professional pest treatment as a condition of bond return — particularly if you have pets, or if there has been a known cockroach issue during the tenancy. We provide tenancy-compliant treatments with written certificates accepted by every major Sydney property manager and real estate agent.
Family Home Treatments
Standalone houses and townhouses with German cockroach issues usually need a thorough kitchen and bathroom treatment combined with identification of how the infestation entered (often via grocery boxes, second-hand appliances, or moving from a previously infested rental). Our family-home treatments start from $89 and use products that are safe around children and pets when applied correctly.
Hotels & Accommodation
Hotels, motels, serviced apartments and short-stay accommodation across Sydney face constant German cockroach pressure from guest luggage and turnover. We provide ongoing programs that combine routine inspection, targeted treatment, and rapid response to guest complaints — all with confidential service reporting.

- Family-safe products. We use APVMA-approved gel baits, IGRs and low-toxicity residuals that are safe around children and pets when applied correctly. We always discuss re-entry times and any precautions before we start.
- Fixed pricing from $89. No surprise charges. We confirm the price before we start work, every time.
- Same-day service. Call before midday and we’ll do everything we can to attend the same day, particularly for restaurant emergencies and severe residential infestations.
- Service warranty. We back our work with a written warranty. If German cockroaches return within the warranty period, we come back at no charge.

- Fully licensed and insured. Compliant with NSW Department of Primary Industries pest management regulations and fully insured for residential and commercial work.
Preventing German Cockroaches From Coming Back
After treatment, the following steps will dramatically reduce the chance of re-infestation. We provide all customers with a written prevention plan after every job.
- Inspect grocery boxes, second-hand appliances and any items brought into the home – German cockroaches almost always arrive as hitchhikers
- Eliminate moisture sources: fix leaking taps, dry sinks at night, and don’t leave damp tea towels or cleaning cloths out
- Store dry food in sealed containers, not in original cardboard packaging
- Take rubbish out daily and ensure outdoor bins have tight-fitting lids
- Clean under and behind appliances regularly – particularly the dishwasher, fridge, microwave and toaster
- Seal cracks around plumbing entries, skirting boards and cupboard corners
- If you live in an apartment, encourage your strata to address building-wide pest control rather than treating individual units

Frequently Asked Questions About German Cockroach Treatmentl in Sydney
How much does German cockroach treatment cost in Sydney?
Standard German cockroach treatments at On Call Pest Control start from $89 for typical residential properties. Pricing for apartments, restaurants, commercial kitchens and severe infestations is quoted individually based on the size of the property and the extent of the infestation. We always confirm a fixed price before starting any work — there are no surprise charges.
How long does it take to get rid of German cockroaches?
Most Sydney residential infestations are reduced by 70–80% within the first week of treatment, with complete elimination achieved within 4–6 weeks. The reason it takes that long is the German cockroach breeding cycle — egg cases laid before treatment will continue hatching for several weeks, and our combination of gel baiting and IGR application is designed to break that cycle entirely. For severe infestations we recommend a follow-up visit 2–3 weeks after the initial treatment.
Are your German cockroach treatments safe for children and pets?
Yes. We use APVMA-approved gel baits, insect growth regulators and low-toxicity residual products that are safe around children and pets when applied correctly. Gel baits in particular are applied as small, hidden dots in cracks and harbourage points where pets and children can’t access them. We’ll always explain re-entry times and any precautions before we start work.
Why do supermarket sprays and bug bombs not work on German cockroaches?
Supermarket sprays and bug bombs fail against German cockroaches for two reasons. First, decades of overuse have produced widespread pyrethroid resistance in Sydney’s German cockroach populations — the active ingredients simply don’t kill them anymore. Second, these products only treat surface areas; they don’t reach the cracks, wall cavities, and appliance interiors where German cockroaches actually live and breed. Professional gel baiting and IGR application target the harbourage zones directly.
Do you treat apartment buildings and strata properties?
Yes. We work directly with strata managers, body corporates and individual apartment owners across Sydney on German cockroach treatment programs. In high-density buildings, German cockroaches travel between units through wall cavities and shared plumbing, so coordinated building-wide treatment is far more effective than treating units one at a time. We can also treat individual units where strata is unwilling or unable to act.
I run a Sydney restaurant — can you provide compliance documentation?
Absolutely. Every commercial German cockroach treatment we carry out includes a written service report detailing the products used, areas treated, and follow-up recommendations. These reports are accepted by Sydney council food safety inspectors and are suitable for HACCP audit documentation. We also provide after-hours and discreet treatments to minimise disruption to your business.
How quickly can you attend a German cockroach call-out in Sydney?
For urgent residential or commercial infestations, we offer same-day service across Sydney Metro when calls are received before midday. For all other bookings we typically attend within 24–48 hours. Call 0426 511 911 to check current availability for your area.
Do you offer end-of-lease German cockroach treatments?
Yes — end-of-lease treatments are one of our most common Sydney jobs. We provide tenancy-compliant treatments with a written pest control certificate that is accepted by every major property manager and real estate agent in Sydney. This is particularly important if your lease specifies pest treatment as a condition of bond return, or if you have pets.
